Tearing disorders

The abnormal function of the Nasalacrimal System can cause over production of tears in the tear glands at the corners of the eyes and/or insufficient drainage in the tear ducts that flow into a sac, then into the nasal cavity. This can be caused from an allergy or infection, blockage or deviated septum or other obstruction. Dry eye is another condition referring to the lack of production of tears due to some of same the reasons mentioned. This condition is caused by aging, auto-immune disease, hormone changes, lasik surgery and other various ocular diseases. Most office- based procedures can alleviate these conditions. One new procedure calls for an irrigation or dilation of the tear duct by inserting a tiny balloon similar to the one used in angioplasty. In some cases reconstructive surgery may be necessary to restore normal healthy function. Dr. Longo is one of the few surgeons who specialize utilizing the latest techniques such as the Endoscopic Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). A fiber optic digital camera is navigated into the nasal cavity and obstructions can be seen and removed by miniature precision tools without the need for incision. The results are more efficient than traditional surgery giving the patient quicker recovery and a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. This can only be used in limited types of tearing disorders.
